This powerful bronze boat sculpture pays tribute to the artist’s childhood memories in Kingabwa, a neighborhood near the Congo River. Named after a local shipyard, King of Kingabwa evokes the emotional return of Lieven D’Haese to this place 45 years later — a moment of deep personal resonance, as the landscape had remained unchanged. The sculpture captures both memory and motion, anchoring the past in the present with poetic strength.
Each sculpture of Lieven d'Haese is a "trip". It makes you travel through the memory and the imagination. This is the magic of his symbolic work and his "savoir-faire" with the sculpture and the foundry work. The subject awakes something deep inside and makes the artlover travel somewhere inside. It brings you direct to the roots...Look at the human expression, feel the movement,... you will certainly understand a message.
