A painted pottery figure of a war horse in the early Tang Dynasty of China in early 8th century.
It is skillfully modeled and sculpted of dense buff red pottery and has good detailing in an excellent condition. The horse is spotted (This is unusual). There are very good remains of the red and white slip and black pigment details. The firing process of this horse is extremely sophisticated.
This leathery, yellowish-brown horse has four powerful hooves, straight ears, no saddle stirrups, and a little tasseling. All these characters are issued from the early Tang Dynasty of China.
The horse is portrayed saddled, standing four square. The handsome head is raise high on a strong neck, looking into far. It has the large, muscular rounded body and small head distinctive to ancient Mongolia war horses from the areas. The ancient Mongolia horses are the fastest and strongest war horses that are very rare to get at that period. The ancient craftsman grasped the characteristics of the horse and created a lifelike and unusual war horse.

Provenance
The Fongxian of Henan province in China was a burial area for the tomb of the nobility of the early Tang classical period.Pieces from these tombs are always very small and exceptional, well executed. This is a larger than usual example of the Fongxian Tang horse type.There was a hair mane and hair tail which are always the case lost.
